Tohai Ozeki was young when he traveled outside of Rikishii Town for the first time to compete in a sumo wrestling competition. He was accompanied by his father Takumi Ozeki. The competition was being held in a neighboring region, and Tohai was excited to see new places and faces. He was also determined to do well in the competition and make his father proud. During a break between matches, Tohai wandered away from the competition grounds and into a nearby forest. As he was exploring, he heard a strange noise coming from a nearby bush. He cautiously approached the bush and found a small Magby fighting a much larger Elekid, Tohai was amazed by the Magby's strength and determination, and he decided to take it with him back to the competition after giving it one of his dumplings. He hid the Magby in his backpack, not wanting his father to find out and possibly disqualify him from the competition. After the competition, Tohai showed his father the Magby and explained how he had found it. Takumi was impressed by Magby's strength and loyalty, and he agreed to let Tohai keep it as his own Pokémon. Tohai and the Magby continued to train and compete together, traveling to other regions and facing new challenges. They developed a deep bond, with Tohai relying on Magby's fiery spirit to inspire him in his sumo matches and in his battles as a Pokémon trainer.
